CELESTE CONSORTIUM: The cross border NG112 project by Beta 80

Next Generation 112 technology has led to a fundamental change in the way emergency services communicate. We have moved from a voice-based system to a multimedia system built on an IP-based architecture, capable of integrating new tools and technologies, and can offer countless services both to the citizens who make the calls and to PSAP dispatchers. This is a real revolution in the world of emergency services, which will allow, first of all, to speed up localization activities.

Beta 80 Group is at the forefront of this revolution and in April 2019 joined the CELESTE consortium (Cross-Border ESInet and LoST Emergenct Service Testing) together with Austria and Denmark, becoming partners in a pilot project aimed at testing NG112 architecture and capabilities in real-life scenarios.

CELESTE Consortium: what it is and what it is for

The consortium tested the connectivity and re-routing capabilities of the NG112 architecture with a focus on how it works across regional, transnational, and international borders. Particular attention was paid to the operation of the system in neighboring areas, not only between regions of the same country but also in different countries.

Over the course of a year, the Consortium successfully established transnational emergency communications, capable of including not only voice communications but also videos and chats. It has therefore shown that it is possible to provide an architecture capable of redirecting through different countries and entities, effectively paving the way for a new and more interconnect european emergency service that will revolutionize the way all EU citizens call 112.

Beta 80 is proud to be part of this incredible project. In the year long work we were able to successfully establish cross-national emergency communication including not only voice but video and texts. We proved that it is possible to provide an architecture that can intelligently route communications through different countries and entites, or applying special routing policies, based on application type, effectively opening the road to a new and more interlinked European emergency service that will revolutionize the way all EU citizens call 112.
